PRESS RELEASE
RACE 3 – Zoggs Mina Mile Open Water Swim Series
Christopher Allan swam his way to a hat trick of wins in Race 3 of the ZOGGS Mina Mile Open Water Swim Series that concluded at Le Meridien Mina Seyahi, Dubai, this past weekend. Organised by Super Sports Events, over 200 swimmers participated in the swim with twice as many spectators supporting them on the beach - all set for some exciting action in the waters.
What made Allan’s efforts even more impressive, was that the day before he had sprained his right thumb and was going to attempt the swims with a heavily bandaged hand and wrist. Along the finishing strip, 15 year old Allan who swims for Hamilton Aquatics and attends Dubai British School, could be seen doing several strokes with only one arm coming out of the water in order to protect his thumb. The 800m was a warm up swim, for the mile event, for Allan finishing the distance in 12min 08sec, 18 seconds ahead of Konstantine Bushmelev and 31 seconds ahead of 12 year old Julian Ulanowski. After a 30 minute rest, Allan was back in the water for the 400m swim where he once again pipped Bushmelev to win in a time of 6:36, 10 seconds ahead of Bushmelev and 26 seconds ahead of Michael de Joode in third place. The Mina Mile, main event of the swim series, saw Allan lead from start to finish over the 1600m course and defend his title in a time of 22:50. Paul Symons finished in second, 10 seconds later with Jordi van Englen taking third spot in 23:46.
Gwen van Beek, another 15 year old swimming sensation from Active Sports, was the stand out swimmer in the ladies section when she won the 400m in 7:29 and the 800m in 12:36. The Mile for females was an extremely close race between defending champion Vicky McDowell and Channa van Englen (18 years), with van Englen pulling away with only 20m to the finish when running to the line. She finished in a time of 25:02 with McDowell 15 seconds behind and Niamh Carr in third in 25:58.
Over 70 juniors aged 12 and under took to the waters in the 200m race. For many it was their first time swimming a race in the sea but shrugged off the nerves to finish to loud applauses from all spectators. Julian Ulanowski representing Hamilton Aquatics was the first out the water in a time of 2:42, followed by Soren Villemsen in 2:50 with Tommaso Manetti in third in a time of 3:06. Marie Dalem of Libra Swim Academy was the first girl out the water in 3:15 and was closely followed by Charlize Koch and Cate Henschel in 3:19 and 3:23 respectively.
This event was sponsored by ZOGGS, Le Meridien Mina Seyahi, The Westin Mina Seyahi, Palmers body lotions, Island Tribe sunscreen, Wild Wadi and The Heavenly Spa. All results and photos can be seen on the Super Sports website at www.supersportsdubai.com

DBS SWIM SQUAD
The swimming squad a growing in stature and there’s a real team spirit developing amongst the students, many of which are now partaking in morning squad swimming on Tuesdays as well as the regular Sunday afterschool slot.
It was time to test their wits against the rest of Dubai in the first meet of the Dubai Schools Swim League.
DBS students swam extremely well and were a credit to the school, finishing 3rd overall, and will be looking to build on this next time round and try to close the gap to the top two. Training will be harder than ever in the lead up to the other meets. And I can now confirm the dates of these as:
Meet 2 – Thursday 24th March @ JESS Ranches 2:45pm start
Meet 3 – Wednesday 6th April @ EIS Jumeirah 3:30pm start
Meet 4 – Thursday 12th May @ DESC (Start time TBC)
